On 14 April 2022, Russia claimed Ukraine had launched airstrikes against populated settlements in Bryansk and Belgorod Oblasts during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Spodaryushino[edit]

On 14 April 2022, regional and municipal authorities said Ukraine had shelled the village of Spodaryushino (near Mokraya Orlovka) in Belgorod Oblast, causing several explosions. While no injuries occurred, the village's population was "temporarily evacuated" out of concerns about a possible escalation. A neighboring settlement also had its population relocated.[1] Governor of Belgorod Oblast Vyacheslav Gladkov said that the attack "had come from the Ukranian side."[2]

Klimovo[edit]

The Investigative Committee of Russia[3] said Ukrainian attack helicopters had launched six missile strikes on residential areas the town of Klimovo in Bryansk Oblast, damaging six buildings.[4]

Officials at the Russian Health Ministry said that seven people had been injured, two of which had been hurt seriously.[4] According to personnel at the city's hospital, among those injured were a pregnant woman and a two-year old child.[5][2]

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk oblast, claimed that "about" 100 residences had been damaged by Ukrainian shelling in Klimovo.[6]

A video of a house in Bryansk burning went viral on the internet, which Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said it could not verify.[5]

Alleged border checkpoint attack[edit]

The Russian Federal Security Service told TASS that a group of around 30 Ukrainian refugees had been attacked with mortar fire as they attempted to cross a border checkpoint.[2][5]

Aftermath[edit]

Schools in Bryansk Oblast were closed down following the attack.[4]

Ukraine denied that it was responsible for the attacks,[7] instead asserting that Russian intelligence services were trying to "carry out terrorist acts to whip up anti-Ukrainian hysteria" in the country.[4]
