Early Life[edit]
Aris Bakhtanians was born on September 13, 1985. He has worked as an attendant at an Arcade game establishment and at a library in Southern California before pivoting towards the fighting game and streaming field.[1]
Career[edit]
Introduction to the FGC[edit]
Aris frequented the arcades during his young days, and after obtaining a Driver's license started going to the prestigious "SouthernHills Golfland" arcade[2], where many of the top players of the Southern Californian Fighting Game Community used to gather, a place considered as the hotspot of the American fighting game scene.[3] There he started playing Soulcalibur 2 and Tekken 5, which led him to competing at a local level.
Initial streaming years[edit]
Aris started streaming weekly tournaments held locally through the livestreaming service Twitch initially as part of the growing trend amongst the American FGC of live-streaming local events. The name of his channel "Avoiding the Puddle" was taken from the name of a command of Tekken & Soulcalibur character Yoshimitsu.[4] He mostly streamed personal favorites in the then present Tekken installment, old Resident Evil titles and playthroughs of the FromSoftware's souls games.
Transition into a full-time streamer[edit]
Aris shifted to full-time streaming after facing employment challenges in 2014.[5] He rose to prominence for his Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Tekken 7 coverage, often acting as a conduit for casual fans providing entertaining and educational guides, a great help for a series known for its great complexity but lacking meaningful in-game guides.[6] He has also been a regular restreamer of official Tekken tournaments when not commentating, often amassing large viewer counts, sometimes pushing Tekken over the more popular Street Fighter title.[7] Since then, he has diversified his content, often streaming low-effort indie games in addition to his usual offering.
Commentary at Fighting Game events[edit]
Aris being a commentator at local events for multiple fighting games, started professional commentary for The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016 in Japan for the finals of the Tekken Professional Circuit that year.[8] Since then, he has been a common sight at major International tournaments like Evolution Championship Series and Tekken World Tour finals.
