Arkadiusz Jacek Regiec (Polish pronunciation: [arˈkadʲuʂ ˈjat͡sɛk ˈrɛɡʲɛt͡s]; born May 27, 1977, in Olsztyn, Poland)[1] is a Polish entrepreneur, founder and CEO of the equity crowdfunding platform Beesfund, as well as co-founder and vice president of the Polish Crowdfunding Society, and a public advocate in favor of crowdfunding legislation in Poland.
Career[edit]
In 2012, after looking for support to a business, Regiec was able to collect the amount with small donations, which inspired him to create an organized collection mechanism. The benchmark was the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, which at the time had operated for three years, and managed to raise $345M, for financing 32,000 projects.[2] Regiec wanted to situate the mechanism in Polish legal reality.[3]
On May 31, 2012, during the first conference of the Polish Crowdfunding Society, Regiec announced the launch of a crowdfunding portal Beesfund that allowed to add equity and non-equity projects,[4][5] and the first equity crowdfunding platform in Poland with an option to buy shares of companies. Payers were not limited to transferring support, but became co-owners.[3][6] During Beesfund’s first years, Regiec evangelized the Polish financial market, convincing its participants to the crowdfunding formula.[7]
On February 5, 2019, Regiec and Beesfund gained a significant media presence during the issue of shares of the major Polish football club Wisła Kraków, which needed to repay its debt of PLN 80M. During one day, 9,129 investors collected 40,000 shares on the platform with a total value of PLN 4M (US$1M).[8][9] The same month, Regiec engaged in talks with another major Polish football club Stomil Olsztyn.[10][11][12]
In June 2019, Regiec announced the construction of a 5-hectare campsite for innovative companies at Lake Ukiel in Olsztyn.[13] The construction of a workplace and home for creators is expected to cost PLN 4-10M, with the opening expected around 2021.[14][15]
Public activities[edit]
Arkadiusz Regiec is a founding member and vice president of the Polish Crowdfunding Society, which deals with expanding knowledge on crowdfunding.[1]
Public advocacy[edit]
Regiec initiated a movement for the amendment of the Act on public collections.[1] In June 2017, he joined the crowdfunding working subgroup at the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF).[16] As part of the Conference of Financial Enterprises in Poland – the Employers' Association, Regiec participated in the work of the working team for the principles of good practices of crowdfunding platforms, which developed a draft of Good Practice Principles for donation-based, loan-based, and equity crowdfunding.[17][18]
Regiec has also postulated that investing in the form of equity crowdfunding should be available to every citizen in Poland. According to Regiec, when investing in innovative companies, tax breaks are crucial, as a result of which investors will willingly incur investment risk, and the impulse would be provisions in the Polish model of British law, which allows for write-offs of up to £500,000.[19] Which Regiec called the idea for the government program the “500 –,” as a pun on Poland’s family-support program “Rodzina 500+,” suggesting that such a solution would contribute to the activation of private capital.[20]
In November 2017, in the light of the KNF's warning about investments in ICO emissions, Regiec appealed to the KNF to create the Working Group for Initial Coin Offerings as soon as possible, and prepared easy legislation for Polish fintech startups.[21]
Hobbies[edit]
In 2016, Arkadiusz Regiec was involved as a producer of the documentary film Anatomia Startupu (The Startup Anatomy) directed by Aleksander Dembski.[22]
Regiec is a lifeguard with the Water Volunteer Ambulance Service (WOPR).[1]
