Arthur Charles Lipner (born September 29, 1958) is an American musician, composer and educator specializing in vibraphone, marimba and steel pans. Lipner's compositions and recorded works are considered important stepping stones in furthering the pedagogy, literature and musical settings for these instruments. He has many credits as an active New York City session player for a variety of media. Lipner is the main character in the documentary Talking Sticks (2016).[1][2][3]
Biography
Lipner grew up in Weston, Connecticut in a musical household. His mother, soprano soloist Judith Lipner, freelanced in the NYC area and he attended many of her concerts. Lipner began classical piano at age 6. At 10 he began a second weekly lesson, studying improvisation and theory with jazz educator John Mehegan. At 13, after discovering the vibraphone, he declined a classical piano scholarship to Mannes School of Music and focused solely on vibes. His first teacher was David Friedman, then Dave Samuels. After earning a BS in Plant Science, Graduate Research in Nutrition (Univ. of Delaware) and post-graduate music studies (Univ of North Texas) Lipner returned to the NYC area in 1984 and began his career. Other studies included The Juilliard School in the late 90’s studying orchestration.[4][5][6]
Lipner has released 9 solo albums and appeared on about 40 others recorded in the USA, Brazil and Netherlands. He has presented over 200 workshops in 23 countries at Juilliard, Royal College of Music (London), Sydney Conservatorium (Australia) and many others.[citation needed] Lipner tours in Brazil regularly and speaks Portuguese. He authored the critically acclaimed method books The Vibes Real Book and Jazz Mallets: IN SESSION.[citation needed] Faculty positions have included Director of Percussion Studies at Univ of Bridgeport 1985-1987 (CT), Guest Faculty of the Brabants Conservatory 1986-1991 (Tilburg, Holland now called Fontys), teacher at Drummers Collective 1998-2000 (NYC) and Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Purchase 1999-2001 (Purchase, NY). Since 2001 he has taught privately at his CT studio, and worldwide as a guest educator and performer sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Mike Balter Mallets and MalletWorks Music.[6][7]
In 2006, Lipner premiered the concerto “Mallet Fantasia” (Lipner/Jens Wendelboe) with the National Symph of Brazil (UFF) in Rio de Janeiro. The piece includes Children's Choir (2nd mvmt) and is a popular programming choice for Percussion Ensembles everywhere. Lipner's solo projects represent a cross section of progressive and contemporary jazz, funk, Caribbean and Brazilian styles. Almost all contain his originals, mostly instrumental. Lipner enjoys writing poetry, and vocalists have recorded tracks on his albums with his lyrics. His current working bands are Brazilian Vibes and the newly formed World Funk group SQUiLL. He also appears as a guest with Brazilian Music Soul and others.[6][8]
The documentary Talking Sticks was officially released in 2016. The film tells the untold story of the vibes and marimba. Shot in Ghana, Mexico, Norway, Brazil, Iceland and USA, it explores the role of these instruments, and creativity, in culture.[6]
