Arunendra Kumar (born: December 13, 1954) is an Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers officer. He served as Chairman of Indian Railways from 2013-14[1], as Member Mechanical in 2013[2], and as General Manager of South East Central Railways in 2011-13[3]. Kumar had a 40 year long service with Indian Railways.
Career in Indian Railways
Arunendra Kumar led and managed one of the largest railways in the world, as Chairman of Indian Railways. During the 40-year long tenure with Railways, he led many key initiatives: laying the foundation for high-speed trains in India[4], the introduction of 100% FDI[5], the development of Eastern and Western dedicated freight corridors[6], improving digital infrastructure, and improving Railway finances by speeding up Railway reforms including private investment[7]. In his capacity as the Chairman of the Railway Board, Kumar functioned as the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India.
An officer belonging to 1976 batch of Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) (Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination 1971), Kumar was in charge of maintenance of a variety of locomotives, coaches and wagons over a career of more than 40 years both in Workshops and open line. As General Manager, South East Central Railway zone, Kumar managed the heaviest freight operation in the Country. As Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai he managed maintenance and operation of all trains and infrastructure over Mumbai Division. Kumar has contributed significantly in various policy formulation at Railway Board Level while working as Advisor (CC) & Additional Member Production unit [8]
Kumar featured on National geographic channel in the serial “Seven Mega Cities of the World” and holds a record of longest Live TV Interview by a Railway Officer on National TV Channel [9]
