Arwad Castle is a Syrian castle located on Arwad Island, Tartous Governorate.
History of the castle
The castle was built in the center of Arwad Island on the ruins of Canaanite settlements, and it was renovated during successive historical eras such as the Assyrian, Pharaonic, Babylonian, Persian and Greek eras. It was liberated by the Mamluk Sultan Qalawun in 1302 AD, then the French turned it into a prison in which they imprisoned the men of the national movement.[1]
After Syria's independence in 1946, Arwad castle became a local museum. On the eastern shore of the island is a coastal castle known as the "Tower" or "Ayyubid Fort", and on the front of its door is an inscription of the Lusignan war emblem (Guy of Lusignan's motto) during the Frankish occupation of it.[1]
