Asa Enami (榎並 杏紗 Enami Asa, born April 17, 2006), known mononymously as Asa, is a Japanese singer, rapper, dancer and songwriter based in South Korea. She debuted in 2023 as a member of the South Korean girl group Babymonster under YG Entertainment, where she serves as the group's main rapper and main dancer.
Asa is registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association as a songwriter, having contributed to multiple tracks including "Batter Up"[1] and songs from the album Drip.[1]
Early life
Asa was born on April 17, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan.[2][unreliable source?] She began dreaming of becoming a singer in elementary school and started attending a dance academy.[3][unreliable source?]
Career
2018–2023: Pre-debut and trainee period
In 2018, at age 12, Asa was selected during YG Entertainment's auditions in Japan after performing "Weekend Warrior" by 80kidz.[4] She subsequently relocated to South Korea to train with the company, beginning a six-year trainee period.[3]
During her trainee period, Asa was noted for quickly learning choreography and received praise from choreographer Lee Jung. She was also recognized for her rap technique, frequently performing excerpts from Eminem's "Godzilla" during monthly evaluations.[4]
On January 26, 2023, Asa was announced as the fourth confirmed member of Babymonster, becoming one of the first Japanese female idols to debut under YG Entertainment alongside fellow member Ruka.[2] Although she placed seventh in the final evaluation round of the pre-debut reality show Last Evaluation, she was included in the final lineup after significant fan support.[3]
2023–present: Debut with Babymonster
