Askalite Formula is an American skincare brand founded in 2021 by pharmacist Hiwot Yohannes. The company formulates products with an emphasis on ingredients for the concerns of melanated skin.[1]

History

Askalite Formula was founded by Ethiopian-American immigrant pharmacist Hiwot Yohannes. She holds a Master's degree in International Trade and Policy from the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University.[1] She has stated that her educational background in policy and trade, combined with her pharmacy experience and international travel, informed the creation of the brand.[2] The company launched in 2021 after four years of research and development.[3]

The brand positions itself with a focus on serving BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) consumers, a demographic reported to face market disparities including higher spending on beauty products and underrepresentation in product safety and formulation.[4][5] Its mission is to address specific skincare concerns for black and brown skin without the use of bleaching agents, which it characterizes as an industry standard it aims to move beyond.[3]

Products

The brand incorporates a proprietary LAND-SEA complex along with skin barrier supporting ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ferulic acid and vitamin C.[3]

Ingredients

A signature ingredient in many Askalite Formula products is Teff peptide, derived from the Eragrostis tef plant native to Ethiopia.[6] The company claims to be the first skincare brand to introduce Teff-peptides into its formulations. Research on Teff protein hydrolysates has indicated potential antioxidant and skin-firming properties for cosmetic applications.[7][8] The brand incorporates other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E, ceramides, algae extracts, and botanical oils like argan oil and rosehip oil.[9]
