Asrar Ahmad Khan (born 15 April 1958) is an Indian Politician and Journalist from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He started politics when he was a student and participated in various social and political movements. He also wrote in many notable newspapers and magazines before serving as an adviser to the minister of railways. He was associated with Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in important roles.
Early Life and Education
Asrar Khan was born on 15 April 1958 in a small village, Maharupur, in the district of Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was the fourth son of Late Abdul Rehman Khan (December 1913 – 31 July 1999) and Rahmatul Nishan. His father was a multifaceted personality, who was a communist politician and landlord agriculturist and was president of the Sultanpur district unit of All India Kisan Shabha. He was also district secretary of the undivided communist party of India.
After his schooling in Sultanpur, he completed a bachelor’s degree from Awadh university, Faizabad. Later, he achieved a master of Arts in sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi in 1983.
Early Political Career
First Political Involvement
In 1967, when he was nine years old, he actively participated in a rescue and protest led by Communist Party of India (CPI,M), for Dalits of Sahangia village. That village was burned by landlords Kshatriyas because laborers were fighting against low wages.
Student Politics
He was expelled from Shri Ram Dev Singh inter college, Kamtaganj in 1975 while agitating to establish a students’ union in the college, just before The Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. During the student movement, many cases were imposed on him and he was sent to Amhat jail, Sultanpur for 37 days when he was only 17 years old. His bail was not granted from the district court and forwarded to the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High court.
During the Emergency period, he was very active in left politics, openly and underground. Just after the Emergency was lifted in 1977, he founded Students Federation of India (SFI) in Sultanpur and became district convener. He also got membership of CPI(M) in the same year. He was chosen among three delegates in October 1977 from Uttar Pradesh for the national convention on Education in New Delhi. He was also a delegate for the 3rd national conference of SFI in Patna in 1979.
On 23 January 1979, he was expelled from Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology (KNIT Sultanpur) where he was pursuing his bachelor’s degree while leading the student movement against corruption and for students’ welfare. The same year, in July, he got admission in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
He resigned from CPI(M) and SFI in 1980 blaming the anti-revolutionary practices of the JNU unit of CPI(M) and SFI. He went on a fast-unto-death for seven days to protest against the sine die closure of the university in the same year.
In May 1983,[1] there was agitation against the proposed new admission policy of the university for the academic year 1983-84, in which he got arrested along with many other students.
Journalism, 1985-1996
After post-graduation, he became a freelance journalist and started writing articles[2] in various magazines and newspapers. He wrote more than 200 articles and reports on current politics in saaptahik hindustan, Mid day, Dinmaan, Buniyadi sangharsh, Vir Arjun, Navbharat Times, Rashtriya Sahara and Jansatta regularly until 1996.
Political career
Adviser to the Railway Minister
He was appointed as an advisor to the railway minister of India, Ram Vilas Paswan in 1996 during the government of United Front and he served in the ministry until the government’s existence in 1998. When Ram Vilas Paswan joined the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1999, he disassociated with him.
National Secretary, LJP
Later, he spent some years on and off in politics, but joined Ram Vilas Paswan again in his Lok Janshakti Party when he lost his election from Hajipur, Bihar in 2009 elections. He was appointed as national secretary and also handled all media work in LJP[3] afterwards. Later, when Ram Vilas Paswan joined hands with Narendra Modi in 2014, he disassociated with him again and joined Aam Aadmi Party.
Later political involvement
Aam Aadmi Party appointed him as a co-observer[4] of Uttrakhand in mission vistar of AAP. He left Aam Aadmi Party when Arvind Kejriwal became Chief Minister of Delhi and sacked some very close party leaders.
Personal life
Asrar Khan married Husn Ara on 29 December 1985. She is a graduate from Poorvanchal University and is the daughter of Late Hakeen Zaheer Haider Noumani (April 1912 – 12 April 2017) of Jaunpur,Uttar Pradesh. He was a well-known Hakeem and pharmacist of Yunani Medicine. He has a son, Ishan Khan, who is an architect from SPA, Delhi, and a daughter, Zeba Khan, who is a research scholar at JNU in the school of international studies.
