Atari Flashback Classics is a series of compilations of old video games released by Atari from the early '70s to late '80s, consisting of many of Atari's games released in the Arcades, on the Atari 2600, and on the Atari 5200. The series was first released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2016, and later was released on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita in late 2018. There are 3 volumes in the series on Xbox One & PS4, but there is only a single collection for the Switch and Vita, combining the 3 volumes game libraries together. This is also the console version of the PC game, Atari Vault, available on Steam for Microsoft Windows, Apple's macOS and Linux, which contains 100 games from the first 2 volumes, even though Atari Vault predates Atari Flashback Classics by about 8 months, releasing in March 2016.[1]

Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 3 is the third volume, and currently the latest in the numbered collections. This title is different in the way that it has more arcade games than previous titles, but also includes Atari 5200 games in the collection. A significant amount of games available on this collection (Mainly 2600 Titles, along with a few 5200 Games) are prototypes, or unreleased games for the system(s). A couple of these games were made available through the Atari Flashback 2 Plug & Play system, released in 2005. Also, a significant amount of the 2600 Titles included in this collection are actually branded by M-Network, which is a division of the company Mattel, who made ports of certain Intellivision games to the Atari 2600.[16] Much like Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, this game includes online multiplayer for every arcade game, and also includes both the game and console manuals for the Atari 2600 and 5200 games.[17]

List of Games in Vol. 3[edit]

Like previous titles, there are 50 games included in the collection, with a multitude of Arcade, Atari 2600, and Atari 5200 games in the package.[17]

Atari Flashback Classics is the full experience of the series, available for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita, releasing in early December or 2018. This compilation includes every game from Volumes 1, 2 and 3, making the total game count add up to 150 games included.[22][23] AtGames helped in distributing the game for the two systems.[24]

The Switch version was announced by Atari & Code Mystics as a game to be released on the console in 2017, but news about the game rarely spread and it wasn't until the game officially released on the Nintendo eShop that many saw the game officially.

The Vita version was actually secretly in development, only hints were given out by the developers, Code Mystics, on their Twitter page, stating that they knew people found trophies that were similar to the trophies for the PS4 Atari collections, before they said it was in development officially to Atari. They then tweeted out what they were working on just before it released.[25]

Reception[edit]

Aggregate review scores
As of November 18, 2019.
Game GameRankings Metacritic
Vol. 1 72.50%[26] 70[27]
Vol. 2 70.00%[28] 68[29]
Vol. 3 72.50%[30] TBD[31]
Switch 67.50%[32] 67[33]
Vita 80.00%[34] TBD[35]

The series has received "generally favorable" to "mixed" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic. They state that the series is hard to suggest to people who haven't played these games before, unlike other compilations like the NES Classic Edition, while also stating that the novel of enjoying the past generation of gaming on the Atari 2600 was mostly the point of the collections.

Critics praised the Nintendo Switch & PlayStation Vita versions, stating that the large game library along with being portable made the collections worth it, praising the Vita version for it's lower price point as well.

The Article has been given new sources and extra Review scores, which was the problem with the article, and why it was declined initially.[edit]

Fixed the article being too closely similar to the "Atari Flashback" page, as they have a similar name, but are not entirely the same.[edit]
