Athar Khan is an Indian student activist, known for taking part in Anti Citizenship Amendment Act protests in India.[1] He is a student of Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok.[citation needed]
Early Life and Education[edit]
Athar Khan was born on 8 February 1995 in The Indian Capital City Delhi. His father Afzal Khan owns a small spices store in Delhi’s Chand Bagh locality. Athar received his primary education in Delhi itself from Andhra Society School, New Delhi.[citation needed]
Activism[edit]
After the Indian Parliament passed the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, people thronged to the streets against CAA. Athar has been active in the protest in Delhi.[2][3] He used to supervise the stage of Chand Bagh protest site.[4] Athar had also participated in the mass movement in India after the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder. Several Civil Society Movements protested against his continued imprisonment.[5]
Arrest and Imprisonment[edit]
On 2 July 2020 Athar was arrested from his residence in Delhi, for allegedly conspiring to incite communal violence during the 2020 Delhi Riots.[6] However, he was brought before the Metropolitan Magistrate and remanded in police custody for 14 days initially.[7] According to the Delhi police, the violence was a pre-meditated conspiracy and all arrests have been made based on forensic evidence.[8] Athar was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) by Delhi Police. He has been kept held in Tihar Jail since then.[9][10]
