Atom Hovhanesyan (August 19, 1981 - May 10, 2018) was an American artist[1] and abstract expressionist painter. His artwork is focused on post-impressionism with a cubist approach to composition.[2]
Background[edit]
Hovhanesyan was born to Ara Hovhannisyan and Gayane Davtyan in Yerevan, Armenia.[3] In 1997, he enrolled at New York University. In 1998, Hovhanesyan was accepted at St. John's University. He relocated to New York in 2009 and that’s when he grew an interest in painting.[4] In 2019, Hovhanesyan began his autodidactic studies.[3][5]
Hovhanesyan developed a unique style of art in post-divisionism and ink drawing. As Hovhanesyan described in his autobiography [5], he painted "not so much in a sense of a narrative but bits and pieces of thoughts or emotions/memories, at times accidental, at times directed consciously, unified in one mood or an atmosphere providing a kind of epilogue that’s open to interpretation."[5]
Hovhanesyan left over 250 masterpieces for public display.[1][2] Hovhanesyan worked and lived in Los Angeles and New York.[1] He committed suicide in May 2018, at the age of 36 due to depression.[5][4]
Career[edit]
Hovhanesyan developed and refined his post divisionist style in a series of paintings of women and landscapes.[1] He studied Seurat drawings, Van Gogh, and Cezanne as he developed a keen understanding of anatomy, perspective, and effects of light.[5][6]
From 2015 to 2017, Hovhanesyan focused on anatomy and figure drawing with Michael Grimaldi and portrait painting with Tom Torak.[5][6]
Hovhanesyan received the Honourable Special Prize of the International Art Competition, Lounge (2021),[7][8] Dante Alighieri International Prize (2021), and Collector's Vision International Art Award. His paintings have been posthumously exhibited in the United States, Germany, and China. His artworks have been featured in Artist Portfolio Magazine (Issue 38, 39, 41, 42, and 43), Spotlight Art Magazine (Issue 15 and 16), Important World Artists (Volume 4 and 5),[9][10][11][12] and Contemporary Art Curator Magazine.[13][10][12][8]
