From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Atomic Shark is a 2016 American horror film that was co-written by Scott Foy, Griff Furst and Jack Snyder. Directed by A.B Stone and produced by Ted Calmers. The film premiered on July 25h, 2016 in the U.S on the SYFY Channel with a running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.[1]It follows a group of lifeguards at a San Diego beach as they try to put a stop to an atomic shark. [2]

Plot[edit]

The film begins with a local scuba diving captain named Rottger out in the water in his small boat with a young woman water skiing. As the young woman, named Sarah, water skis she is attacked by a shark with a glowing red fin. The movie then focuses on four lifeguards at a San Diego beach, Gina, Kaplan, Reece, and Kylie. One of the lifeguards, Gina, has noticed dead fish washing up ashore. This has prompted the watchful eye of both the government and two married environmentalists. Felice and Troy Stanley approach Kaplan, another lifeguard. They ask him if he knows about what is going on at the beach because they claim that government ships are snooping around. They also claim that swimmers and boating enthusiasts have seen a glowing red shark-like creature in the water. Kaplan suggest that they interview Gina, who is studying to become an environmental scientist. In her interview, Gina reveals that she has been seeing dead fish wash ashore and possible radiation in the area. When asked about the shark-like creature Gina states that a shark in contact with radiation would be radioactive and would emit intense heat, claiming that if such shark were to exist it would be impossible to kill.  The shark makes a reappearance, attacking a boat and blowing it up due to the heat that it emits. The attack kills all on board and even the two para-gliders attached to the boat. Kaplan swims out to help but has to out swim the burning para-sail. Meanwhile, the federal government claimed that what happened was only a boating accident that occurred because the engine caught on fire. After witnessing the accident, Gina decides that she wants to go out into the ocean with her dad, who happens to be Rottger, to see the shark with her own eyes. So that she can figure out how to stop the shark. Gina then takes a Geiger counter to check the radiation of the dead fish that have washed ashore. Meanwhile, Skip Forte, a reality TV show host, goes to a local restaurant to host his food show, Show Chew-Megadon. As he is eating his dish, which happens to be the catch of the day, he starts to become sick. The fish that he ate, which happens to come from the ocean waters of San Diego, causes him to blow up in a fiery mess. All of the fish that are being served in the restaurant catch on fire from the radiation, causing the whole restaurant to catch on fire. Gina and Kaplan enlist the help of Fletcher, a guy who spies on beach-goers with his drone. They take a drone with a Geiger counter to find the shark, they believe that the probable cause for the atomic shark is a soviet sub that went down in the area. They manage to track the shark and they witness the shark attacking a beach-goer, at the same time Reece, the head lifeguard, sees the shark and attempts to kill it, dying in the process. .The shark then jumps in the air killing Kylie and landing on shore, but it goes back into the water before it can explode. The water is the only thing cooling the shark and preventing it from exploding, in this way the shark resembles a nuclear reactor. With this information in mind, Gina proposes luring the shark out to sea for fear of causing a nuclear explosion close to the San Diego coast. The plan is to use two boats to lure the shark out far away from the coast. The use chum to lure the shark and in the process Fletcher is killed by an exploding oxygen tank. Troy gets thrown off the boat by a jumping shark and gets eaten by the atomic shark. Rottger falls into the water and is attacked and killed. Felicia attacks Gina and blames her for her death and ends up getting killed by the atomic shark breaking through the floor of the boat. In order to kill the shark, Gina lures the shark to a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, where the shark gets beached. Gina swims away and manages to propel the boat away with oxygen tanks with Kaplan right before the atomic shark explodes.

Reception[edit]

According to Michael Therkeisen, Atomic Shark is one of the better movies to premier on the SYFY. Noting that the acting is better most films of the same genre. He also praises the script, stating that Atomic Shark is much better than Sharknado.[2] Other reactions, agree that the film is a fun film, which should not be taken too seriously. Griff Furst, one of the co-writers of the film, has stated that the movie is a comedy.[3] Several critiques have also praised the acting of bth Jeff Haley and Rachele Brooke Smith. The overall consensus is that Atomic Shark is a lot of fun! [4]

Possible sequel? The ending of the film seemed to show another atomic shark. The scene seemed to focus on the Russian submarine leaking radiation into the ocean. Suggesting that while the atomic shark was killed in the film, it seems that the writers left it open for a possible sequel. However, there has been no mention of a sequel being in the works.
