Aubie Angel, CM, MD, BSc(Med), MSc (Exp Med), FRCPC, FCAHS, is a Canadian endocrinologist, clinician-scientist, academic leader, and health research advocate. He is noted for his research into adipose tissue biology and lipid metabolism, and for national leadership in health research policy and advocacy in Canada.[1]
Early life and education
Angel was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Bachelor of Science in Medicine (BSc(Med)) in 1959. He subsequently trained at McGill University’s Department of Experimental Medicine in internal medicine and diabetes, where he began research on adipose tissue and lipoprotein metabolism.[2]
Academic career and research
Angel’s research focused on adipose tissue biology, lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, and metabolic disorders such as obesity. His work helped establish that in obesity the total body cholesterol pool increases due to the accumulation of cholesterol in adipose tissue, and that dietary fats with high omega-3 content are associated with smaller fat stores compared with saturated fats.[1]
He held academic appointments at the University of Toronto, including Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences and Director of the Clinical Sciences Division, before becoming Professor and Head of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba and Head of Medicine at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.[2]
Angel has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored book chapters, edited medical texts, and contributed to major multidisciplinary discussions in endocrine science and health research policy.[2]
Health research advocacy and leadership
Angel co-founded the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism to advance clinical collaboration and research in endocrine science.[3]
In 2000, he founded the non-governmental organization Friends of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) to engage the public in informed discourse about health research and to promote funding and policy support for biomedical and health sciences research in Canada. FCIHR has organized educational symposia and supported research trainee career development.[3]
Angels’s advocacy work includes establishing the Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research, which recognizes outstanding achievement in health research internationally, and producing the Video History of Medicine in Canada project documenting milestones in Canadian medical science.[2]
He has served as a Senior Fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto, where he mentored emerging scholars and helped found the Massey Grand Rounds program, an interdisciplinary forum connecting medical students and health professionals with broader societal discussions on health and medicine.[4]
Honours and recognition
In 2015, Angel was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to endocrinology and to the establishment of health organizations in Canada.[5]
In 2021, he received the Individual Leadership in Advocacy Award from Research Canada in recognition of his national leadership in promoting health research and innovation.[6]
The University of Manitoba established the Aubie Angel Young Investigator's Award in Clinical Research in his honour, acknowledging his mentorship of junior researchers in clinical sciences.[7]
