Aurora 4x is a freeware space construction and management simulation game, developed and designed since 2004 by indie programmer Steve Walmsley. The game includes robust space simulation systems and procedural star system generation. As the name suggests, gameplay is centered around the 4X formula: Explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. Players can create their own species, construct starships, colonize star systems and encounter alien races. The game's complexity has been compared to titles like Dwarf Fortress and Rule the Waves 2.[1]

The game was initially developed in the Visual Basic 6 language until 2012. After this, Steve Walmsley ceased development and began porting the game to the C Sharp language. Since April 2020, Aurora 4x has 2 public versions: The one developed in C Sharp, called C# Aurora, and the old Visual Basic version, now called VB6 Aurora.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

The game is set around interstellar exploration, based around the use of resources called trans-newtonian elements. These chemicals can break the fundamental laws of relativity, and allow for FTL and warp travel, cloaking devices, and others. However, these elements are rare, and limited to few planets and asteroids; Thus, the player will be required to colonize other planets in their solar system, and eventually extrasolar systems, to continue growing. Aurora 4x has no endgame conditions, so the player is allowed to play and expand endlessly.

The core gameplay of Aurora 4x is similar to other 4X titles. The player is initially limited to their home planet, and must first survey planets for these trans-newtonian elements, settle them, and carry the minerals back by ship or by the use of planetary mass drivers. The game simulates complex starship design; Players must customize engines, radars, armaments, armor, shields, and more.

Development[edit]

Steve Walmsley, the game's developer, has stated that Aurora 4x "wasn’t designed and then built, or even planned out in advance. It has evolved over the last years, with new additions and many changes to existing features", and that "Aurora is really a game for me to play that I just happen to make available to others".[3]
