Winds of Change is a 2D furry visual novel/point and click adventure video game developed by Tall Tail Studios. It is considered as a spiritual successor to the 2015 game Major\Minor, which is also a visual novel.

The game was released for Microsoft Windows in August 2019. A year after it's initial release, it was announced that it'll have a Nintendo Switch port.[1] The Switch port of the game was released on June 3, 2021.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

The player takes the role of a seer (or a seeress) that can recruit up to six party members by the end of the game. Each character has their own personal story that spans the entirety of the game. The game is fully voice acted with side quests and optional contents. Inspired by Dragon Age and Mass Effect, a huge amount of dialogue choices let you role play exactly as you want.

Winds of Change also incorporates a Karma Meter, dubbed "Purity and Corruption". An optional choice that is linked to which side until after the player make that choice; character interactions and the characters' interactions with each other can be affected by their choices as well. There's also Troop Morale to keep an eye on and a Parallel Chronicles that show what other characters elsewhere are up to. The game also features the Affinity System, this allows for special "Heart-To-Heart" moments with team members where you get some alone time with them to deepen your bond as allies, friends, or perhaps even start a romantic relationship, regardless of gender, with a teammate...or more, if they so desire.

Development[edit]

Winds of Change is a self-published game by Tall Tail Studios. Development was financed through a crowdfunding campaign on the website Kickstarter. The campaign was launched on February 14, 2017, with a goal of $7,500 CAD (approx. US$5,700). On March 16, 2017, the kickstarter has ended and they reached $29,410 CAD (US$22,248). During the development, Klace had posted stretch goals on Kickstarter: The first stretch goal they had reached was a prequel novella which raised over $10,000 CAD.[3] The second stretch goal they had reached was expanded exploration elements which raised over $11,000 CAD.[4] The third stretch goal they had reached was interactive Books, which is an inspiration of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim where the player can read books that can be found in-game. It raised over $12,000 CAD.[5] The fourth stretch goal they had reached was the "knowledge and information tracking system," which Valessa's dialogue will change as she reads more books and becomes more knowledgeable. It raised over $13,000 CAD. [6] The fifth stretch goal they had reached was the World Map System where players can choose which location to go via point and click. It raised over $14,000 CAD.[7] The sixth stretch goal they had reached was a fully-formed prequel novel which has approximately 40,000 words. It raised over $15,000 CAD and it ends the first wave of the stretch goals.[8]

After having completed the first wave, Klace had announced a second wave on Kickstarter. The seventh stretch goal they had reached was a playable tech demo that can be downloaded. It raised over $18,000 CAD[9] and the demo was released on February 25, 2017.[10] Stretch goals eighth, ninth, and tenth was reached within one day. The goals they had reached was an original ending song for the game, an expanded musical score, and a Digital Deluxe Edition which includes: a digital artbook + commentary, the soundtrack of the game, and a steam bundle which features his 2016 game Major/Minor. The eighth goal was set at $20,000 CAD, the ninth goal was set at $22,000 CAD, and the tenth goal was set at $23,000 CAD. The reached goals combined sums up the total of over $65,000 CAD.[11] The eleventh stretch goal they had reached was minimal voice acting where characters will have voice cues in the game. It had raised over $25,000 CAD.[12] There was a stretch goal reaching for $30,000 CAD to include partial voice acting, but the goal was never met before it reached the deadline.[13]

Reception[edit]

The game received “mixed or average reviews” on PC according to review aggregator Metacritic.

Notes[edit]

  1. Kyle Lambert's development studio is only mentioned in the Steam version; he uses his alias "Klace" for the Switch port as it felt using the studio's name is "impersonal".
