A history[1] of the wildcard players awarded at the Australian Open since 1996.[2][3]

Wildcards given to French players[edit]

Since 2000, the Tennis Australia has agreements with the French Tennis Federation to give one French player a wildcard into the main draw of the Australian Open; in return, an Australian player is given the same into the French Open later in the year.[4]

Wildcards given to American players[edit]

Since 2007, the Tennis Australia has agreements with the United States Tennis Association to give one American player a wildcard into the main draw of the Australian Open; in return, an Australian player is given the same into the U.S. Open later in the year.

Wildcards given to Asia-Pacific players[edit]

The Australian Open is officially promoted as the 'Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific'. Hence, one Wildcard into the main draw (since 1996) is given to a player representing an Asia-Pacific[5] nation.
