Authena AG[edit]

Authena AG (formerly Acatena AG[2]) is a Swiss company that has established an innovative platform to tag, track, and authenticate high-value goods. The company is committed to supporting brands in the protection of their products, their reputation and their customers.[3] The company provides its services worldwide. Authena AG currently operates in more than 75 countries around the world. It has 11 patents pending in the United States and Europe.

Authena AG's goal is to support brands in the fight against counterfeiting and illegal diversion of goods and services through advanced authenticity and traceability platforms.

History[edit]

Founded in 2018, it started operating in the wine sector, working with Italian[4] and Spanish producers in the prevention of wine fraud and counterfeiting. Besides being active in the Food & Beverage sector[5], today Authena operates in various markets, protecting and tracing crop protection[6] and industrial products, pharmaceuticals[7], perfumes and cosmetics[8]

Authena supports brands in promoting sustainable growth in all these industries to help achieve the eighth Sustainable Development Goal[9] with its anti-counterfeiting solutions.[10]

Organization[edit]

The founder and CEO since the company's founding is Matteo Panzavolta.[11] The company is headquartered in Zug (capital of the Swiss canton of Zug) in Switzerland, within the European Union. Authena has about 25 employees (2022) in many countries including Switzerland, Italy and the United States.

Software and services[edit]

The company has developed a proprietary anti-counterfeiting and end-to-end traceability technology. Interactive NFC tags, applied at the level of the minimum saleable unit, are programmed to contain encrypted information related to the single unit itself. Once a tag is associated and attached to a product[12], every interaction with it is automatically tracked and recorded by the platform, including attempts to remove or tamper with the tag.[13]

All product characteristics, along with its integrity status, can be verified at any time via an NFC-enabled mobile device.[6] To guarantee the transparency of the whole system, the information is saved and monitored through "smart contracts" on Ethereum blockchain, which have the role of keeping track of every interaction between the digital and physical worlds, and to maintain anonymous and verifiable evidence on the status of the products equipped with the tag, their geolocation and their use.[14]

Authena technology integrates[edit]

  • Fraudulent re-filling protection
  • Traceability and grey market prevention
  • Product opening identification
  • Effective end user direct engagement
  • Instantaneous authentication of genuine product[15]
