Imagion is one of the largest authoring studios in Europe and a global provider of distribution services for the media and entertainment industry.[1] In 2006, the company launched the short movie Elephants Dream, the very first HD DVD in Europe.[2][3]

History[edit]

In 2000, Imagion AG was founded as a strategic alliance between various German companies from the cities of Trier and Trierweiler where the company's headquarters are still located today.[4][5] As of 2005, the startup had employed 45 permanent employees and generated four million euros annually in sales revenue.[6]

On August 14, 2006, the company produced Elephants Dream, the first HD DVD in Germany and Europe.[7] Shortly afterwards an additional music DVD in high definition followed. The title Stage Fright of the British cult band Motörhead allowed European users to access certain, for the time groundbreaking online functions. For instance, it was possible to add current tour dates of the musicians in the menu via a corresponding update.[8]

In addition, Imagion became known in the field of Blu-ray authoring due to its innovative design of the disc menu and the bonus material. Features such as Bonus View (profile 1.1) or BD-Live (profile 2.0), which are considered to be absolute standard elements nowadays, were realized for the first time by the company from Trierweiler.[9][10][11] When Imagion released the title Neues vom Wixxer, the world's first Blu-ray Disc with Bonus View in December 2007, its additional functions were not yet supported by the players available in Germany, as the corresponding specifications made higher demands on local storage and required secondary audio and video decoders.[12][13] In 2010, the company produced the first Blu-ray 3D in Europe.[14]

Products[edit]

By 2020, Imagion released over 10,000 DVDs, Blu-rays and digital projects.[15] The company works among others with VOD services such as Apple and Netflix.[16][17]
