Early life and education[edit]

In 2012 Autumn Asher BlackDeer graduated from Greenwood High School. At the time of her high school graduation, BlackDeer had 33 hours of college credit from concurrent enrollment in the WATC program at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. She went on to attend Arkansas Tech University and as a freshman she began studying journalism. However, after working one summer at an inpatient mental health facility and meeting the clinical services director, she decided to change her path to psychology in her sophomore year[2]. Autumn continued to work inpatient mental health throughout her undergraduate career, going home on the weekends from school to work as a behavioral health technician. In 2015 she graduated magna cum laude from Arkansas Tech University with her Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology[2] . After graduating from Arkansas Tech University she went straight to graduate school for her master's degree in Social Work. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma - Tulsa, Zarrow School of Social Work in 2017, receiving her Masters in Social Work (MSW).[9]. While in 2022 she graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with her PhD in social work due to her dissertation on the manifestations of structural violence seen through Alaska Native mothers. She was able to obtain data and the experiences of interpersonal violence perpetrated by family, partner(s), and the community. From the data that was collected she was able to look at the effects interpersonal violence has on mental health, substance usage and maternal-child health outcomes[2][3]. During her time at Washington University, BlackDeer was on the Committee of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity and a board member on the University Sexual Assault Investigation Board[3].

Career[edit]

Autumn Asher BlackDeer worked at the Center for Innovation in Child Maltreatment at Washington University[3][2]. During her time working at the Center for Innovation in Child Maltreatment she learned about data pertaining to the pregnancies of Alaska Native women from the Epidemiology center of Alaska. Discovering this data was able to inspire her research question that she would use for her PhD dissertation[2]. BlackDeer currently works at the University of Denver in the in the Graduate School of Social Work as an assistant professor on the tenure track[2][1]. BlackDeer also currently holds positions at the Washington University as a Buder Faucalty member, and Smith College, School for Social work as a masters of social work adjunct instructor[1][10].

Research[edit]

Current research[edit]

BlackDeers current research focuses showcasing Indigenous voices by utilizing quantitative approaches that yield large quantities of data in order to more accurately portray a larger picture. BlackDeer is committed to decolonizing the academy and in doing so she has become a racial equity scholar that holds emphasis on Indigenous tribal sovereignty[11] [1][3]

Previous research[edit]

BlackDeer has done research on treatment-resistant opioid disorder, addiction treatment, and substance abuse and interpersonal violence which present compelling evidence to support providing treatment programs such as bridges to sobriety application[12][13][14][15]. BlackDeer has also done mental health related research such as depression and anxiety in college students, interventions for mental health within Native American and Alaska Native youths, and behavioral health at historically black colleges and universities[16][17]

Outreach[edit]

At Washington University in St. Louis - Brown School, Autumn Asher BlackDeer cofounded the BIPOC PhD collective for doctoral students of color[8][18][19]. The BIPOC collective for doctoral students of color provides students with workshops in order to help students interested in pursuing child maltreatment prevention research.
