Axel Meise (born November 13, 1962) is a German entrepreneur and designer.[1] He is the founder and chief designer of Occhio, a lighting and design company based in Germany.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Born in Düsseldorf, Meise started studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich in 1982. During his studies, he designed and sold a light fixture.[3] In 1987, he presented a low-voltage system at a trade fair.[4]

Meise resides in Starnberg with his wife Susann Meise (born 1964), who is part of Occhio's management, and they have two sons.[5] Meise has received several awards, including the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Product Design Award.[6]

Career[edit]

In 1990, Meise founded Axel Meise Licht GmbH and acquired a light gallery in Munich's Haidhausen.[7] In 1998, he developed the modular Occhio product family with physicist Christoph Kügler.[8] The following year, he established Occhio GmbH in Munich and introduced the Puro product line.[9]

In 2004, Occhio launched the Sento lamp series, and in 2009, transitioned to LED technology.[10] In 2010, Meise introduced the Più spotlight system, and in 2012, developed the Io luminaire series.[11]

In 2014, the Sento series was updated with LED technology. In 2017, EMH Partners became a partner, acquiring a 44 percent share in Occhio.[12] The same year, Meise developed the Mito series with gesture control.[13] In 2020, Benno Zerlin was appointed co-CEO, focusing on operations while Meise concentrated on design and strategy.[14]
