Azhar Jatoi (15 February 1960 – 18 November 2020) was a Pakistani political activist and peasant leader. He was the grandson of Hyder Bux Jatoi and chief of the Sindh Hari Committee (Sindh Peasants Committee).[1]
Comrade Azhar Jatoi was born on 15 February 1960 in Hyderabad, Sindh. He received his education up to graduation in Hyderabad and joined the hari struggle in 1982.[2]
He strived hard to carry forward his grandfather’s mission and took on the responsibility of peasant activism at an early age. Like Hyder Bux Jatoi and his father Mazhar Jatoi, Comrade Azhar consistently spoke for the rights of the poor and resisted injustice against peasants.[3] He remained associated with the Anti Greater Thal Action, Kalabagh Dam Action Committee, and Ponam, a coalition of nationalist parties.[4] He also participated in protests against the dual local government system introduced by the PPP government in Sindh in 2012.[5]
After years of service to the hari community, Comrade Azhar passed away due to cardiac arrest on 18 November 2020 at the age of 60.[6] He led the Sindh Hari Committee until his death and tried to emulate his grandfather by raising his voice for haris at all forums. He was laid to rest in Kalhoro Colony near the grave of Hyder Bux Jatoi.[7]
