BIGFlix was an Indian video on demand platform owned by Reliance Entertainment. Launched in 2008, it is widely recognised as India's first over-the-top media service (OTT) platform. Initially operating as a hybrid physical DVD rental and digital streaming service, BIGFlix transitioned to a strictly digital model in 2011. After several years of inactivity due to limited digital infrastructure in India, the platform attempted a global relaunch in 2017, but ultimately failed to gain market share. Its parent operating entity later entered corporate insolvency proceedings.

History

Launch and early operations

BIGFlix was launched in 2008 by Anil Ambani's Reliance Entertainment. At launch, the service functioned as a hybrid online DVD rental and digital video-on-demand (VoD) service, supported by physical retail outlets across India, similar to the early business model of Netflix. In late 2011, BIGFlix ceased its physical DVD delivery operations to focus exclusively on digital streaming under a paid subscription model branded as "BIGFlix Plus".

Despite being a pioneer in the Indian OTT market, the platform struggled with early consumer adoption. During its initial years, the digital landscape in India was limited by high data costs, low broadband penetration, and the reliance on 2G and early 3G mobile networks. Consequently, Reliance paused aggressive capital investments into the business. Shibasish Sarkar, the then-Chief Operating Officer of Reliance Entertainment, later noted that as the first organised player in an unorganised and heavily pirated market, the company deliberately "decided to wait for infrastructure to develop" and kept the platform minimally active for several years.

2017 relaunch and insolvency

In April 2017, following a dramatic drop in Indian 4G data prices driven by the launch of Reliance Jio, Reliance Entertainment attempted a major global relaunch of the platform. The revamped service offered over 2,000 high-definition films in nine Indian languages.

However, the 2017 relaunch failed to achieve commercial viability against heavily funded, newer competitors in the Indian OTT space, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar. The streaming service was eventually phased out, and its web domain became defunct. Furthermore, the platform's corporate operating entity, Big Flicks Private Limited, defaulted on its financial debts. The company was subsequently admitted into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 on 25 September 2025, by the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
