In March 2015, a team at the hospital conducted a sleeve gastrectomy which enabled a man from Iraq weighing 300 kilograms to lose over half of his weight in the span of a year.[11] In December 2015, a team of 3 surgeons at the hospital successfully removed an aneurysm (7 cm) from the brain of an elderly woman. The case is notable because aneurysms bigger than 2 cm are classified giant and extremely hard to operate on.[12]
In 2016, a 15-month old infant at the hospital was cured of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).[13]
In July 2017, a 45-year old male underwent a liver transplant from a patient who died of cardiac arrest. This was the first successful case of liver transplant from Donation After Cardiac Arrest (DCD), as opposed to a kidney transplant, which had been done previously in India.[14] In the same year, a team of nephrologists, anesthesiologists, and critical care specialists from BLK Hospital assisted the doctors at Muhimbili National Hospital to conduct Tanzania’s first kidney transplant on a 30-year old Tanzanian woman.[15]
In April 2018, the cardiothoracic and vascular department of the BLK Hospital carried out a successful heart transplant on a 56-year-old male within 3 hours of harvesting the organ. A green corridor was created to speed up the transportation of the donated heart.[16] That same year, a Nigerian woman received the rare Osada procedure for a 12-year long adenomyosis of the uterus that affected her spine due to subsisting pain.[17] Again in 2018, a 51-year old Iraqi male successfully received an artificial heart implant at the hospital after his heart was weakened due to gunshot injury in a kidnapping and ransom case.[18] Nearly 18 months later, his original heart resumed functioning.[19][20][21][22]
