Baal Indradj Oemrawsingh (25 August 1940 – March 1982) was a Surinamese professor of biochemistry at the University of Suriname. He was one of the victims murdered by the military regime of Dési Bouterse.
Biography[edit]
Oemrawsingh was born into an Indo-Surinamese family in the Nickerie District. After his elementary school, he was sent to Paramaribo with his twin brother Sugrim Oemrawsingh to attend secondary school. After this, he followed a university study in chemistry at the Leiden University in the Netherlands. Here, he also became socially active and politically aware. Together with, among others, Frank Wijngaarde and Nizaar Makdoembaks, he was a member of the board of the Surinamese Youth Association Manan in The Hague.
After being promoted in the Netherlands at the Free University Amsterdam, Oemrawsingh started working as a professor at the University of Suriname. In March 1982, he was arrested by the military, presumably because of his involvement in the failed counter-coup by Surendre Rambocus and others against the rule of military leader Dési Bouterse. Oemrawsingh was considered the political leader of the counter-coup and was imprisoned and tried. It did not come to a verdict, he was murdered by the military.
The heavily bloodied body of Oemrawsingh was taken to the airport Nickerie to be transported to the Netherlands for the funeral accompanied by his twin brother Sugrim Oemrawsingh. At the time, he swore revenge on the perpetrators, but was later killed himself during the massacre in Fort Zeelandia on 8 December 1982.
