Babatunde Fagbohunlu is a prominent Nigerian lawyer,[1] partner and the head of the litigation, arbitration and ADR practice group in Aluko & Oyebode.[2]

Legal background[edit]

A member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the London Court of International Arbitration and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, in December 2008 he was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Nigerian Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (the Nigerian equivalent of Queen’s Counsel).[3]

Sometime commentator on Nigerian legal matters,[4] in 2020, the Legal 500 Europe, Middle East & Africa recognised him as a leading individual in Dispute Resolution.[5] He was ranked Band 1 in Dispute Resolution in Chambers Global 2020 and described as "well known and highly regarded, involved in ground-breaking matters in the oil and gas industry".[6] Also recognised in the 2020 IFLR1000 rankings and described as a "very established practitioner", he is an exclusive recipient of the 2020 Client Choice in the Arbitration & ADR category (Nigeria) by Lexology and was nominated for the African Arbitrator of the Year Award at the inaugural African Arbitration Awards 2019.[7]

Personal life[edit]

Born on 5 May 1968 to Olusola Emmanuel Fagbohunlu and Racheal Folurunsho Fagbohunlu, for his early schooling Babatunde Fagbohunlu attended legacy institution, Methodist Boys High School,[10] and went on to Universities of Ife, Ile Ife, Nigeria and Lagos to obtain LLB / LLM / PHD / Jurisprudence Doctor JD degrees in 1987 and 1991 respectively.

A recognized human rights supporter,[11] Fagbohunlu Babatunde is mentioned by Chidi Odinkalu, Edetaen Ojo and Eze Anaba as being integral to the drafting of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information (FoI) Law.[12]
