Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi (ഡോ. ബഹാഉദ്ദീൻ മുഹമ്മദ് നദ്വി; الدكتور بهاء الدين محمد جمال الدين الندوي; ml; born 22 April 1951) is an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar and academic administrator from Kerala. He is the founding Vice-Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University in Chemmad, Malappuram district. He has been listed in The Muslim 500, published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, consecutively since 2012.[1]
Early life
Nadwi was born on 22 April 1951 in Kooriyad, near Kottakkal in Malappuram district.[2] His father, Muhammad Jamaluddin Musliyar, was an Islamic scholar in the Malabar region. His maternal grandfather, Zainuddin bin Ahmed known as "Thenu Musliyar", was a Sufi teacher in twentieth century Malabar.[3]
Education
Nadwi received a diploma in Arabic Language Teaching from the Government of Kerala in 1971 and graduated from Jamia Nooriyya Arabiyya, Pattikkad, in 1974. He completed the Afzal al-Ulama degree at the University of Calicut in 1979.[2]
He studied at Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow from 1981, completing a degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies (1983) and a postgraduate degree in Islamic Studies. He earned an MA in Arabic Literature from Aligarh Muslim University in 1987.[2] He also undertook an advanced diploma at Al-Azhar University in Cairo and later completed a PhD at the University of Calicut on the literary contributions of Imam Jalaluddin al-Suyuti.[3]
His teachers included Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi, E.K. Aboobakar Musliyar, Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi (former Grand Imam of Al-Azhar), and Ali Gomaa (former Grand Mufti of Egypt).[4]
Career
Academic administration
Nadwi served as Vice Principal of Darul Huda Islamic Academy from its founding in 1986. When the institution was upgraded to a university in 2009, he became its first Vice Chancellor.[5] In 2015 he signed an academic cooperation agreement with Kuwait University, and in 2025 he signed a further agreement with Al-Azhar University in Cairo.[6]
Organisational roles
Nadwi is a member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, to which he was elected in 2011,[7] and of the Central Council (Mushawara) of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the main body of Sunni scholars in Kerala.[8]
In 2024, he was elected President of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Muallimeen (Kerala Islamic Teachers' Federation), having previously served as its General Secretary since 2005.[9]
Editorial work
Since 2003, Nadwi has been Editor-in-Chief of Thelitcham (തെളിച്ചം), a Malayalam monthly journal. From 2017, he has served as Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Suprabhaatham (സുപ്രഭാതം), a Malayalam daily associated with the EK faction of Samastha.[2]
Controversies
In May 2024, Onmanorama reported that the Mushawara (central council) of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama had issued a show cause notice to Nadwi over remarks concerning the editorial policy of Suprabhaatham. The dispute related to allegations that the newspaper had accepted political advertisements contrary to Samastha's stated editorial position.[10]

Nadwi has authored, translated, or edited over 50 works in Arabic, Malayalam, and English, covering Quranic sciences, Islamic jurisprudence, Hadith, Arabic literature, Sufism, and comparative religion.[1] Among them:

Recognition
Nadwi has been listed in The Muslim 500, published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre and Georgetown University, consecutively since 2012.[1] In December 2019, he was nominated for the Shihab Thangal Islamic Personality Award by a jury that included Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal, in recognition of his work on integrated religious and secular education in Kerala.[2]
