Bala Hatun is a central character in the Turkish TV series Kuruluş: Osman, portrayed by the Turkish actress Özge Törer [tr].[1][2] She is based on Rabia Bala Hatun, the daughter of Sheikh Edebali and second wife of Osman I.[3] Bala is portrayed as the first wife of Osman in the series. Törer won the Best Actress of the Year award at the Crystal Globe Awards for her performance as the character.[4][5]

Background[edit]

Bala was born as the daughter of the renowned Sheikh Şeyh Edebali, the son of Mahmut Derviş. Her mother Ulduz Hatun died from plague whilst Bala was young, leaving her father to raise her alone. She also formed a close relationship with another lady of the Ahi brotherhood, Gonca, who was also raised by Şeyh Edebali after her parents' death. Eventually, she was sent into Kulucahisar Castle in order to reclaim some relics from the devious Prensesi Sofia.

Storyline[edit]

Season 1[edit]

In the first season, Bala, along with Gonca and Dursun Fakıh, infiltrates Kulucahisar and takes back the stolen relics. Bala also saves a young man, Osman, from injury after noticing him drowning, and falls in love with him. Although Osman is originally suspicious of her intentions, he eventually also falls in love with her after she introduces him to the Ahi brotherhood, led by Şeyh Edebali. This, however, leads to jealousy from Osman's cousin Aygül Hatun, who has an unrequited love for Osman. As the love develops, Osman sends her aunt Selcan Hatun to ask Şeyh Edebali for Bala's hand in marriage, although the Sheikh declines the request, saddening both Osman and Bala.[6] The heartbroken Bala also tries to deflect unwanted romantic attention from the devious Alişar Bey in the meantime. Later, after being led into a trap by Osman's devious aunt Zöhre Hatun, Bala is stabbed by a Mongol soldier and later discovers that she is unable to produce a baby. This devastates her, and she tries to convince Osman to end his love for her due to this, although Osman refuses. She is also saddened after Osman tries to stop Aygül from marrying Alişar Bey, thinking he had fallen in love with her, although he was actually trying to curb Alişar's influence. Eventually, after Osman sees a symbolic dream, Şeyh Edebali gives permission for Osman and Bala's marriage. However, during their wedding, Zöhre tries to poison the wedding food and kill them, although they are ostensibly saved by Hazal Hatun, who kills Zöhre, boosting her reputation in the tribe. Bala comforts and looks after a mentally ill Aygül after this, with the enmity between them having ended, whilst Alişar is beheaded by Osman.

Season 2[edit]

In the second season, Bala is shown as having settled into the Kayı tribe, along with her best friend Gonca, whilst both her and Gonca treat the tribe's Hanım, Selcan Hatun, as their own mother. She also has tense relations with Hazal Hatun, and is tasked by Osman's father Ertuğrul Bey to interrogate her. She also deals with the arrival of Osman's brother Savcı Bey and his wife Lena Hatun, who are originally hostile to Osman and Bala, but later come to support them. Bala later deals with the arrival of the devious Targun Hatun, who seeks to marry Osman, to the Kayı tribe. After Ertuğrul dies and Osman becomes the Bey, Bala is poisoned and made to fall ill by the jealous Targun, who is later arrested and exiled by Osman.[7] After Osman reveals his father's will for him to marry a second wife, Bala reluctantly accepts and seeks to marry Aksu Hatun to him, unaware of Hazal's plans to use her as a spy, although Osman declines Bala's proposal. Eventually, Targun returns and occupies the tribe, taking Bala hostage and killing Aksu, but is stopped by Göktuğ Alp, who helps Bala kill Targun. Bala also later has tense relations with Malhun Hatun upon her arrival at the tribe, with Bala ignoring Malhun's warnings of treachery within the tribe.

Positions[edit]

After her husband Osman became the Bey, Bala became the Hanım of the Kayı tribe, replacing her mother figure Selcan Hatun. This gave Bala command over the Hatuns of the tribe.
