Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning (also known simply as Baldi's Basics and as Baldi's Basics Classic) is a 2018 independent parody horror video game created and developed by Micah McGonigal, the first of the videogame series Baldi's Basics, inspired by educational games of the 1990s, which it parodies, especially by mimicking the poor graphics and the themes of those games. The game is about a student in a school where the titular character and antagonist, Baldi, is the math teacher. The game was first released as a beta on March 31, 2018 on itch.io for Microsoft Windows and macOS, receiving generally positive reviews for its music and originality, and later was fully released on June 12, 2020, including the edition with the story mode and all the other editions set inside the school or in other places.

Plot[edit]

After the unnamed protagonist's friend forget his notebooks inside the school, he asks them to recover them. But when they enters inside the school, their teacher wants they to also solve 7 math problems while recovering them, promising them that he will reward them should they answer correctly but also very easy to anger since it's necessary to just be unable to answer one of his 7 problems, despite that 6 of them are impossible to solve since they are represented as only incomprehensible gibberish and any kind of asnwer given would be incorrect (which the game leave unclear if they are legitimately impossible to solve or instead they represent the inability of the protagonist to solve more complex math problems), and indeed will start to chase them after they'll inevitably answer the second problem to violently punish them and so the protagonist will be forced to continue to search all the other notebooks while also answering the other impossible problems, angering this way even more Baldi which will gradually increase his speed, around the school while avoiding being chased by him and also avoiding the other characters' hindrances, and then to escape from the school.

Gameplay[edit]

The player must find their friends seven notebooks that are spread throughout the school, without being caught by their teacher, Baldi, and being hindered by the other students and faculty, then exit the school in order to win. Each notebook contains three simple arithmetic problems, but the third question is unsolvable in the second notebook onwards. If the player chooses to answer every question wrong, they will experience an alternative ending, including a strange-looking distorted version of Baldi and another hidden character asking you to burn the game's DVD.[1]

Development and release[edit]

The game was initially made as an entry in the annual Meta-Game Jam,[2] where it received 2nd place.[3] In an interview with Gamasutra, the game's developer cited the 1996 game Sonic’s Schoolhouse as his main inspiration.[4] It became popular for its humour-like difficulty and surreal gameplay.[5] Popular YouTubers such as DanTDM, Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, PewDiePie, and Kindly Keyin made videos on the game[citation needed], helping to boost its popularity.[6]

The developer launched a Kickstarter for the game,[7] where he announced that the full game will be released on June 12, 2020. The Kickstarter raised a total of $61,375.[8]

On August 12, 2019, the Baldi's Basics full game early demo was released to the public.

An enhanced Kickstarter Exclusive Demo came out on November 2, 2019.
