Bamboo (October 14, 2011 – January 5, 2026) was a mixed-breed dog from Southern California known for skateboarding through the coastal communities of Solana Beach and Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
Early life
Bamboo was born in a litter of nine to a stray in a cave near San Bernardino.[1] He was adopted at eight weeks old through Labradors and Friends by Mike Bolaris of Solana Beach.[2] A DNA test revealed he was primarily mixed-breed, with some Rhodesian Ridgeback and American Staffordshire Terrier ancestry.[2]
Skateboarding
Bamboo learned to skateboard alongside his owner during morning walks, eventually developing the ability to propel himself using his hind legs, steer, and navigate the sidewalks along Highway 101 in Solana Beach.[3] The two became a familiar sight around town, Bamboo rolling alongside or just ahead, drawing waves and smiles from locals and tourists alike.
Videos of Bamboo skating show a dog fully in control, shifting his weight through turns, scanning ahead, and maintaining a relaxed posture. "It's pretty much the happiest dog I've ever seen," one passerby told Inside Edition in 2016.[1]
Media coverage
A 2015 video titled "Bamboo Skates Seaside" received over 25 million views in four days after being shared on Facebook.[4] Bamboo was subsequently featured by ABC7,[5] NBC San Diego,[6] and Inside Edition.[1] Individual videos on his Instagram account later accumulated tens of millions of views as of January 2026.[7][8]
