Bangladesh Railway Class 7000 is a class of broad-gauge (1,676 mm) diesel-hydraulic locomotives of Bangladesh operated by Bangladesh Railway. A total of 20 locomotives of this class entered the fleet of Bangladesh Railway in 1980, all delivered in a single phase.
Builder's details
Class 7000 locomotives were manufactured by Ganz-MÁVAG of Hungary. These 20 locomotives were delivered to Bangladesh all in a single phase.
Technical details
Class 7000 locomotives are among the first diesel-hydraulic locomotives of Bangladesh, along with the Class 3200 locomotives. They are also the only diesel-hydraulic broad gauge locomotives ever operated in Bangladesh. Their power output is 500 hp and they can achieve a maximum speed of 60 km/h.
These locomotives were considered one of the most unsuccessful locomotive classes in Bangladesh. As of 2020 (40 years after entering service), no locomotives of this class remain active. No locomotives were preserved.
Besides Class 7000, 22 Class 3200 and 38 Class 3300 locomotives were produced for Bangladesh Railway, bringing the total fleet of diesel-hydraulic locomotives across all three classes to 80 units.[1] These three classes share many similar specifications, with the key differences being that the Class 3200 and Class 3300 are metre gauge and have different power outputs.
Classification and numbering
The number series/class of these locomotives is 7000 and they are numbered from 7001 to 7020. Their class specification is BHZ–5.[2][3][4] The designation breaks down as follows:
- B = Broad gauge
- H = Diesel-hydraulic
- Z = Ganz-MÁVAG (manufacturer)
- 5 = 5 × 100 = 500 hp
Usage
Upon introduction, Class 7000 locomotives were used exclusively for shunting operations. They were not deployed on mainline passenger or freight services.
Liveries
The Class 7000 carried two liveries over its operational life:
- Red with white stripes (no longer used)
- Blue
