B&E Ltd (Bank of us) is a financial institution operating in Tasmania, Australia. Established in 1870 as the Launceston Equitable Building and Investment Society and, after merging with Bass Building Society, was renamed as B&E Ltd in 2001 and has operated as Bank of us since 1 November 2017.[1] Bank of us is Tasmania's first customer owned bank.[2]
Bank of us’ head office is located in Launceston, Tasmania and has retail branches in Hobart, Devonport, Ulverstone, Burnie, Launceston, Wynyard and Rosny. As of 2021, Bank of us’ total assets were valued at $1.24 billion AUD ($1.01 billion held in loans) with 31,800 active customers.[3]
History
The Launceston Equitable Building and Investment Society in January 1870, issuing its first loan of $400 AUD to James Birchall. Launceston Equitable Building and Investment Society was renamed to Launceston Equitable Building Society in May 1877.[4]
Equitable Building Society and Bass Building Society merged on 1 November 1998 to form the Bass & Equitable Building Society; later renamed to B&E Ltd on 1 November 2001.[5]
B&E Ltd rebranded under the business name Bank of us on 1 November 2017 - becoming Tasmania's first customer owned bank.[6][7]
