Basilico's Pasta e Vino is an Italian restaurant in Huntington Beach, California, owned and run by Tony Roman.

Description[edit]

The restaurant offers Italian cuisine. Dishes served include chicken parmesan; fettucine with pesto, pine nuts, and shrimp; chicken marsala; pasta primavera; and homemade tiramisu.[1] The main dining room can seat between 35 and 40 persons.[2] Outside the restaurant, a Gadsden flag is flown alongside an American flag.[3]

History[edit]

The restaurant was founded in June 1999[1] by first-generation Italian American Rosemarie Roman (née Basilico).[4] Originally located at Magnolia and Yorktown,[5] it moved to another location in Huntington Beach in 2017,[6] in between a beauty parlor and a gymnasium on Hamilton Avenue and Brookhurst Street.[7] As of August 2021, the restaurant is owned and run by Tony Roman.[8]

In June 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in California, the restaurant instituted a "patriotic policy" prohibiting diners from wearing masks,[9] while billboards advertising the restaurant contained slogans like "Leave the mask, take the cannoli".[10] Despite Governor Gavin Newsom's lockdown order in December 2020, Basilico's remained open.[11] In June 2021, the restaurant was fined $152,000 by California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health for a violation of pandemic guidelines.[12] The following month, the restaurant introduced another policy that called for diners to furnish proof that they were not vaccinated against COVID-19.[13] Roman described Basilico's as a "Constitutional Battleground ... in defense of Liberty and Freedom";[14] the restaurant also set up an organization called "Make Restaurants Great Again".[15]

The restaurant accepted $57,738 from the COVID relief Paycheck Protection Program. Roman justified this saying that "It’s our money, not theirs!"[16]
