Battelle National Biodefense Institute
The Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) is an American non-profit organization which focuses on bioterrorism prevention[1]. BNBI houses and operates the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.[2] Located in Frederick, Maryland.
The institute itself also conducts research and development and manufactures several products.[3]
Battelle runs a 160,000-square-foot facility. The campus houses a "Biosafety Level-4 high-security research laboratory, where scientists handle some of the world's most dangerous agents" such as anthrax and Ebola. Scientists also do research on pathogens that don't yet have a treatment or vaccine.[4] Battelle manages the federal biochemical weapons investigations laboratories at Ft. Detrick.[4]
The lab was among ten businesses honored in August 2014 as "Best Places to Work" in Frederick County, Maryland. [1]
