Battle for Mospyne
Battle of Mospyne — a military clash between units of the Zadneprovsk Division and the Volunteer Army.
History[edit]
In early 1919, Mospyne was occupied by units of the Zadneprovsk Division. Having established themselves on the outskirts of the village, they fought defensive battles on the outskirts of Yuzivka.
On 13 May 1919, Shkuro's troops launched an active attack on the Mospyne area. The defensive battle was fought by the 9th Zadniprovsky and 55th (formerly 15th) Ukrainian regiments. To reinforce the Makhnovists, the 1st Soviet Rifle Regiment under Chaika left Volnovakha station, and from the wagons it went to the position to help the regiments there.
The Shkurovtsy attacked in columns and, supported by three armoured trains armed with six-inch naval guns and two tanks, pushed the Makhnovists to the Besheve-Karavanna line after fierce resistance, and they left Mospyne and Kuteynikove.[1]
In this battle, the 9th Zadniprovsky and especially the 55th regiments suffered heavy losses. Almost the entire command staff of the latter was killed, and the regiment was left with about 500 soldiers.[2]
