The upstart Muslim Mamluk Sultanate had been at war with the Christian Kingdom of Makuria to its south since at least 1272 when Makuria attacked the Egyptian town of Aidhab.[1] This came to an end in 1276 when Sultan Baibars fought David of Makuria in a series of battles that ended in Makuria's defeat at their capital of Dongola.[2]
