The Battle of Makariv was a military engagement in the town of Makariv in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, that happened during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The battle lasted from 28 February 2022 to 1 April 2022 and ended with the withdrawal of Russian forces.
Battle[edit]
On 28 February 2022, a Russian convoy carrying military equipment was repelled by Ukrainian forces.[2] According to the mayor of Makariv Vadim Tokar, on 30 March, the Ukrainian armed forces deployed equipment in the town, including artillery batteries and rocket launchers.[3] On 2 March 2022, the Ukrainian forces claimed that they still held control of the city.[4] On 9 March, it was reported that there was being heavy fighting in the city,[5] with this situation being the same in 15 March.[6]
On 8 March 2022, three tank crews of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine took part in the battle for the recapturing of Makariv.
On 25 March 2022, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Command of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Gruzevych said at a briefing that Makariv was in a "gray zone", with no troops having full control over it,[7] although it was located in the area affected by Russian artillery.[8]
On 28 March, during a counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the village of Motyzhyn near Makariv was recaptured. It was reported that the mayor of this village, Olga Sukhenko, and her family had been murdered by Russian occupying forces.[9] Russian troops hastily began to leave their positions and on 1 April 2022, and the entire territory of the Makariv settlement hromada (that is, the hromada, "municipality", of which Makariv was part of) was under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[10]
Aftermath[edit]
Following numerous clashes between the belligerents, Makariv was largely destroyed and damaged. It was also abandoned by civilians who fled during the fighting, and less than 1,000 inhabitants were still in the city by March, in comparison to the 10,000 people it had before the conflict.[11]
During this battle, several civilians were wounded or killed. First, a video taken by a city security camera showed two elderly civilians in a car, probably trying to flee the city, stopping after seeing a Russian armored vehicle. This vehicle then opened fire on the car, killing both passengers.[12] On 7 March 2022, a bread factory was bombarded by airstrikes while around 30 people were there, the bodies of 13 civilians were extracted from the rubble and five people were rescued.[13]
On 8 April, mayor Tokar said that according to preliminary estimates, the settlement had been destroyed by about 40%, and 132 civilians were found shot by Russian executioners.[1][14]
