The Southern Utah–Utah Tech football rivalry, known as the Battle of the Ax, is the football game between Southern Utah University and Utah Tech University.[1][2] They have met four times as NCAA teams with Southern Utah leading the series 3–1, but they are tied 1–1 in the Division I era of the rivalry.[3] Both schools are members of the United Athletic Conference and are separated by 51 miles.

Southern Utah and Utah Tech have been rivals dating back to the 1930s when both schools were junior college's. They met multiple times on the football field from 1937 to 1962 but ceased the rivalry when Southern Utah became a 4 year college in 1963, while Utah Tech remained a junior college.[1][2]
In 2006 Utah Tech would join the NCAA as a Division II member.[4] In 2009 the schools would play each other for the first time since 1962 in Cedar City, Utah, at Eccles Coliseum in front of a record 10,028 spectators.[5] Southern Utah won 36–7.
It was announced in 2019 that Utah Tech would become a NCAA Division I team.[6] They, along with Southern Utah, would join the Western Athletic Conference in 2022 and play their first game against each other as both Division 1 members on September 24, 2022. Southern Utah would win 31–17.[7]
Both teams joined the United Athletic Conference in 2023.[8]
