Early Life[edit]

Late Prof Batuk Sanyal, a versatile Thinker, Philosopher, Academician, political and cultural journalist, writer, and the author was born in Eklakhi Malda West Bengal in 1920. With brilliant schooling, he topped in matriculation in the Rajshahi division of the undivided Bengal in 1935 and graduated in Mathematics in 1939 from Scottish Church College Kolkata with distinction.

Contribution for Indian Freedom[edit]

He worked for a short span at the Dhaka Secretariat and then became an active columnist of the well-known "Shanibarer Chhiti' writing under the pen name Nirbodhananda and Kalapahar during the indian freedom movement (1941-46). He was also the editor of Bihar Herald Patna for a short period.

Career[edit]

In 1946, he arrived in Bombay, and along with a teaching career, he completed his post-graduation and a doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Bombay. He was also a columnist in Mysindia as a film critic and scripted stories for Raj Kapoor. In 1949, he married Ranu Sanyal, a versatile singer, and writer. She has been a winner at the All Bengal music competition thrice (1939-42) and her book Shib Thakurer Apon Deshe on Ethiopia in 1964 won the best travel writing of that year and was acclaimed amongst the Bengali literary circle.

Dr. Batuk Sanyal taught in Harrar Ethiopia during the regime of Emperor Haile Selassie and also in Ilorin Nigeria for 5 years (1958-63).

In 1964, he joined the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and served IIT for 16 years until his retirement in 1980.

Post Retirement[edit]

After retirement, he lived in Varanasi with his son Prof Ritwik Sanyal, an eminent Dhrupad exponent and academician at Banaras Hindu University. He has been actively writing in Organiser weekly and during his lifelong career, has published more than 200 articles in diverse areas viz. politics, social philosophy, art, film, ecology, spirituality, and futurology

Prof Batuk Sanyal breathed his last in Varanasi on 21st March 2002.
