Bayode Treasures Olawunmi
Bayode Treasures Olawunmi is a Nigerian Mechanical Engineer, a brand specialist[1] and a Guinness world record holder in the Longest Marathon Reading category.[2][3][4][1][5]
Early life[edit]
He was born on 21 September 1978 at Ikorodu in Lagos State, Nigeria.[6] His love of books started when he began reading in Primary 3.[7] While schooling, he used to assist his parents by hawking fruits and cocoyam.[7]
Education[edit]
He attended Comprehensive High School, Ketu, Ikorodu, Lagos State,[7] and later studied Mechanical Engineering at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.[6]
Career[edit]
Before successfully breaking the world record, Bayode held a trial session via live streaming at 3pm on Monday 24 October 2017 which ended at 3pm on Friday, 28 November 2017 , totaling 96 hours of reading. He read a total of 10 books.[7]
Eventually, Bayode broke the world record by reading for 122 hours over a five-day stretch, at the Herbert Macaulay Library in Lagos, Nigeria.[8] He officially set the new record at exactly 3:30 on Saturday 3 March 2018, having started the reading at 1:30 PM on Monday 26 February. He read mostly Nigerian literature by authors Toni Kan , Leye Adele, Sarah Ladipo Manyika and others.[1]
His world record attempt was supported by the Lagos State Government, Tagheuer, Guaranty Trust Bank, and others.[9][1] Four days after the event, on 7 March 2018, Bayode was received by the then Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday 7 March 2018 at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja alongside top government officials.[5][9]
The previous world record was held by Mr Deepak Shama Bajagain from Nepal, who read a total of 17 books aloud for 113 hours 15 minutes[10] between 16–24 September 2008.[7] He currently works in a private company and lives in Ikorodu, Nigeria.[7] He is the Chief Executive Officer of I Read Afrika Foundation and organiser of the annual Marathon Read Aloud contest. The year 2021 contest, with the theme “Read to Build” is scheduled to hold from 1–20 March at the Herbert Macaulay Library in Lagos, Nigeria.[11]

He is married to Tosin Olawunmi, financial services expert,[6] and they have three children. They got married on 1 March 2008.[12]
