Launched in 1991, Beat-Down Newspaper holds the distinction as the first Hip Hop publication started in New York City by Queens natives Haji Akhigbade and Sacha Jenkins. The paper seriously covered Hip-Hop Culture, Rap Music, Graffiti and Graffiti subculture, art, film, fashion and Socio-Political issues affecting youth. Beat-Down Newspaper helped lay the foundation for gritty authentic Hip-Hop culture media, music, and art at the apex of the 1986-1994 Golden Era of Hip-Hop.
Beat-Down’s 1991 debut was a pivotal year in Hip-Hop Culture when the Rap Music that spawned from Hip-Hop Culture was becoming more commercially corporate focused and not fully represented by Rap Fanzines and other Hip-Hop & Rap music publications at the time. With its unmatched balanced gritty coverage of Hip-Hop culture as a whole, the independently owned and funded Beat-Down Newspaper stood apart from heavily funded rap music fanzines and rap music magazines at the time like The Source which was launched out of Boston, Massachusetts by Harvard grads David Mays and Jonathan_Shecter, Rappages which was launched a year prior by Hustler Magazines Larry Flynt, and Vibe which launched two years later by media juggernaut Time Inc. with the assistance of Quincy Jones. Beat-Down Newspaper would be the first independently owned, distributed, self-funded, and operated Hip-Hop publication co-founded by Akhigbade who was a recognized producer, creator, and practitioner of Hip-Hop Culture and its core elements.
