Belgrade Choral Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Belgrade Choral Society also referred to as the First Belgrade Choral Society was founded in Belgrade in 1853.[1][2] In its first thirty years of existence, 1853-1883, the Belgrade Choral Society became the nucleus around which Serbian classical music developed. Under the guidance and leadership of talented composers, the Society became a major cultural institution in its own right. By 1883, Kornelije Stanković had died, and Davorin Jenko had left. A new leader emerged, Josif Marinković.

Based on the founding principles of the movement which led to Serbian national music and the importance of the work of Kornelije Stanković, Josif Marinković, with his own innovations, added to the already mounting body of Serbian music.

Marinković's compositions played on the idiomatic and characteristic folk music. From these sources came his kolos and patriotic songs which, in the Romantic period of the 1880s, warmed audiences and fostered pride in the common culture of Serbs everywhere throughout the Balkans and beyond. Even today, some of his works, like narodni zbor, have freshness, beauty and relevance.

Marinković remained with the Belgrade Choral Society a short time, between 1881 and 1887, though he left a visible trace, a large number of prepared concert programs which were imprinted with the indelible mark of his compositions -- Kola, Narodni zbor, Jadna majka, and others. The tone of the musical programs, for the first time since Kornelije Stanković, was of pure national character.

Josif Marinković's successor at the Belgrade Choral Society, Stevan Mokranjac[3] appeared on the Serbian music scene as choir director at the very most opportune moment, just as when Serbian urban society was mature. The grand successes which the Society enjoyed during the period of his leadership, from 1887 to 1914, are attributed to his remarkable ability both as a composer and choir director.

Leaders of the Belgrade Choral Society

Stevan Mokranjac, born in Negotin, Serbia, was one of the most prolific composers of Serbian classical music. He studied music in Munich, Rome, and Leipzig. From 1887 until his death in 1914, he served as choir director of the Belgrade Choral Society. He was the founder of the Serbian School of Music in 1899 and president of the Society of Serbian Musicians in 1907. Under his direction the Belgrade Choral Society toured Austria-Hungary[4], Imperial Russia[5], Bulgaria[6], Turkey[7], Germany[8], and Greece[9].

Petar Krstić succeeded Davorin Jenko as the musical director of the National Theatre in Belgrade and was the director of the Stankovich School of Music.

Dr. Miloje Milojević was professor of music at the University of Belgrade and a well-known music critic. Among his dramatical works is "The Death of the Yugovich Mother". He also wrote music for the liturgy. There came others: Predrag Milošević, Stanislav Binički, Isidor Bajić, Stevan Hristić, and many others.
