From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ben Birillo (1928–2020)[1] was an American visual artist, curator, art dealer, and art collector.[2][3]

In 1964 at the Paul Bianch gallery (where according to the late New Zealand artist Billy Apple Birillo was a partner[4]) on Manhattan's Upper East Side Birillo curated an exhibition of pop art: The American Supermarket featuring the work of Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselman, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Artschwager, Jasper Johns (represented by one of his beer can sculptures which was pulled by the collectors who lent it to the exhibition Robert and Ethel Scull[5]), Mary Inman, Billy Apple, and Robert Watts.[6][7][8][8][8][9][10][11][12]

As a painter though he was a contemporary of many of the major Pop artists he saw himself as not belonging to any particular school of art. On the subject he stated..."“No—I’m just an artist. I don’t belong to any school. I just create art. It’s my life. My life is my art. I don’t understand anything else..."[13]

Birillo was also the printer of Lichtenstein's Turkey Shopping Bag editions which the latter showed in the aforementioned American Supermarket show.[14]

In later years Birillo showed works from his "Spirit Dogs" series at the Georges Bergès gallery in the SoHo section of Manhattan.[15]

The major Americn art collector and magazine publisher Peter Brant recalls that he purchased his first Warhol work from Birilo.[16]
