Ben de Guzman

Ben de Guzman is currently the National Managing Coordinator for the Diverse Elders Coalition (DEC) and a steering committee member of the Rainbow Dragon Fund. He was previously the Co-Director of Programs for NQAPIA. He also served as the National Coordinator for the National Alliance for Filipino Veterans Equity and serves on the Executive Committee for the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project.

Early life and education[edit]

Ben was born and raised in suburban New Jersey, USA, by Filipino immigrant parents.[1]

He has a B.A. in Mass Communication and Spanish from the University of California at Berkeley and studied at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.[2]

NQAPIA[edit]

Ben de Guzman directed the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance’s groundbreaking multimedia campaign on LGBT immigrant’s rights, which included gathering more than 8,000 postcards through local, grassroots organizing calling for comprehensive immigration reform, a series of videos and written testimonials on the impact of immigration on LGBT people and their families, and op-eds in mainstream, ethnic, and LGBT press.[2] Ben was also active in the national dialogue on comprehensive immigration reform in 2013, focusing on engaging both local NQAPIA membership to lift up queer AAPI immigrant voices in the debate, as well as national partners to make specific and strategic impact where we can on the policies and legislation that are being developed.[3]

Filipino Veterans[edit]

As part of the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project, he has provided trainings for over 1,000 students as a Facilitator for the APIA U Leadership 101 program of OCA: Asian Pacific American Advocates. From 2006 to 2009, he also led the National Alliance for Filipino Veterans Equity in their successful campaign to restore U.S. veteran status for Filipino World War II veterans.[2]

Diverse Elders Coalition[edit]

He currently manages all phases of DEC’s work, from policy and advocacy direction to communications, social media, and member engagement.[2]
