Benedikt Sebastian (born June 30, 1989) is a South African actor, musician, and writer. He is known for his early work as a singer-songwriter in both English and Afrikaans with producer Gabi Le Roux, editorial modeling spreads in magazines, including Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan, and acting roles in films including the Boer war historical epic Blood & Glory, South African comedy Van der Merwe, and American psychological drama Station to Station.

Early life and education[edit]

Sebastian is the son of Afrikaans-language writer and playwright Engemi Ferreira and husband Johann Jordaan.[1][2] Born in the South African town of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), he grew up in primarily agricultural and rural parts of the country, which he declares to have been formative in terms of his artistic perspective and worldview.[1]

Sebastian holds a degree in visual communication from The Open Window School of Visual Communication, and a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Cape Town.[3][1][4]

Music[edit]

Sebastian first took to the stage as a musician and singer in 2007, and in July 2012, he released his first EP Jy Weet Ek Weet, produced by famous South African music producer Gabi Le Roux in Cape Town. The album consisted of 12 genre-crossing songs co-written by Sebastian.[5][2] Le Roux noted the significance of the modern album featuring songs in Afrikaans, observing "Afrikanership is warm and sexy, but our music is often still stuck in the rut of the old-fashioned ‘sokkie’ approach. We bring modern dance beats to the table, with sharp lyrics that will linger in your mind."[2]

In 2013, the South African Music blog named Sebastian as one of "100 South African artists that prove that South Africa has musical talent."[6][7] That same year, he released an English-language track, the dance-pop song "Closer."[8]

Acting and modeling[edit]

Sebastian works as both actor and model in South Africa and the United States.[9][10] In 2013, Sebastian was selected by the South African edition of Marie Claire for their annual celebrity "Naked Issue," posing nude with other celebrities, including model Candice Boucher and Paralympic swimmer Cameron de Burgh, representing various professional disciplines in support of lifesaving organ donation.[11][12][13]. That same year, he was featured in Cosmopolitan South Africa's "ManManual" feature[2] and 2017, he was one of the faces of the launch campaign for the Tynell Underwear brand.[14][15]

Sebastian has more than 60 film and television credits around the world, appearing in the 2016 South African Boer War epic Blood & Glory from Sean Else and as "rogue cop" in South Africa's first superhero series "Jongo."[16][17] In 2017, Sebastian began to work primarily as an actor, appearing in South African comedy Van der Merwe and the Pakistani film Na Maloom Afraad 2, among other projects.[18][19] After moving to the United States for greater industry opportunities, he's worked in commercials, independent films, and on developing his own writing and directing projects (including Sundance Collab submission "Oh, Brother").[20][21]

In 2021, Sebastian starred in the psychological drama Station to Station, from director Benjamin Bryant, the film selected to open the 2021 Las Vegas International Film and Screenwriting Festival, where it received eight jury nominations (including for Best Film) and won the festival's Audience Award. Sebastian's performance as the main character's estranged elder brother was praised in early reviews of the film, for which Sebastian received a a career-first "with Benedikt Sebastian" honorific credit[22][23][24][25]. He shares an IndieEye Film Awards win and FILMHAUS Berlin nomination for "Best Ensemble Cast" for his work in the film.[26][27]
