Students of Daribhit High School near Islampur under North Dinajpur district, West Bengal, rising agitation for seeking Bengali medium teacher instead of Urdu medium teacher since mid-September 2018.[2][3] On 20 September 2018, newly appointed teacher of Urdu and Sanskrit try to join the school with help of police protection as flurry students, guardians, alumni and local residents started protesting and cumber peacefully against joining of Urdu teacher.[4][5] The newspaper reported, that time police fires and lathi-charge on flurry people. In this incident, two students namely Rajesh Sarkar,[6][7] and Tapas Barman[8][9] gunned down. Rajesh Sarkar died while he was taken to local hospital, and Tapas Barman died next day in the hospital. Another class tenth student Biplab Sarkar[10] also injured.[10]

As soon as Students of this school came to know an Urdu teacher will join their school, they gave a petition to Headmaster-in-charge not to allow to join Urdu teacher as there are no Urdu medium students in this school rather they want others language teacher especially Bengali.[4] Preliminary Headmaster in charge give assurance but on 20 September Urdu teacher try to join the school with help of police protection.[2][5] Then Students of Daribhit High School started agitation for seeking Bengali teacher.[9]

Trying to impose Urdu medium[edit]

A purely Bengali medium[11] school, Darivit High School, became centre of a controversy while the state government appointing three Urdu medium teachers for the school.[12][13] That overwhelming Bengali speaking students as they needed Bangla medium teachers . Newspaper reported, Darivit High School having strength of 1700[14] where none of the students had opted for Urdu[15] as a subject.[14][16] Instead of appointing teachers in the subject of English and History, the two departments crippled by shortage of teaching staff.[17] The students had been demanding the appointment of teachers in Literature and Science subjects in Bengali medium as those posts were lying vacant for years.[2]

Police firing[edit]

On September 20, 2018, while cops from Islampur police station accompanied the three teachers to the school, the students, alumni, and villagers instantly took to an agitation. Some 2,000-off of them blocked the entrance to the school and also the highway passing nearby.[12][16]

As soon as police asking to lift the blockades, a commotion broke out between students and police. Promptly police served a warning that force will be applied if the agitators do not back out. And then situation became more tense.[12]

Initially cops run for a cover and with reinforcement arriving a little later, police turned aggressive. They first resorted to firing tear gas shells, rubber bullets and then a lathi-charge. The students continued to retaliate by hurling brickbats.[11] Newspaper reported, fretted cops then open fire[16] on the agitators. Rajesh Sarkar,[2] 19, an alumnus of the school and a student of Islampur ITI College, gunned down on spot and another student Tapas Barman[8][9] died next day in hospital.[12] Another class tenth student Biplab Sarkar[10] also injured.[10]

Sources said that after three new teachers were appointed at the school, a group of students put up a protest saying that they had demanded teachers of literature and science subjects and teachers who were proficient in imparting education in Bengali medium.[18] The students claimed that there was no one in the school who studied in the Urdu medium[14][15][16] and alleged that the police had acted without provocation.[16]

Protest in Kolkata[edit]

Locals of Kolkata organized a torch rally on Sunday against the alleged police firing on students at Islampur. Protestors also raised slogans and held banners during the protest. Protestors are demanding justice against such brutal actions.[19]

Aftermath[edit]

  • Controversial Urdu teacher Md Sanaullah constrained to cross-examine.[20]
  • School Commission called Headmaster-in-charge, Avijit Kundu, for hearing.[21]
  • Family member of deceased students do not want to cremate bodies keeping opportunity of second postmortem possible to establish what kind of bullets killed them[22] and want CBI investigation.[23][21]
  • BJP has also called for a statewide shutdown on September 26, 2018.[24]
