Benigno "Ben" Preagido Beltran SVD (born 5 June 1946) is a Society of the Divine Word priest, author, and theologian.[1]

Life[edit]

Beltran was born in Kolambugan, in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. He is the firstborn son of Benigno Balance Beltran (Sr.) and Concepcion Malugas Preagido. After school education he began studying electronic engineering at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila in 1961. In 1967 he joined the Society of the Divine Word and studied in Manila and Rome. Beltran was ordained priest in 1973 together with the former Archbishop of Taipei, John Hung Shan-chuan. In 1985 he obtained his doctoral degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University after writing his thesis entitled Who do you say that I am? A theological inquiry into the notions held by Filipino catholics concerning the person and functions of Christ.

From 1978 until 2000 Beltran was professor at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay. Between 1978 and 2008 he worked among scavengers (waste pickers) on the Smokey Mountain dumpsite in Tondo, Manila, that formerly was the third largest dumpsite of the world.[2]

From 1985 he was Scholar in Residence at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago for a year. 1988 he was guest professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. In 1989 the Parish of the Risen Christ was erected on the area of the Smokey Mountain dumpsite and Beltran was the first parish priest until 2008. In 2008 Beltran was Leader-in-Residence at the P. F. Drucker Graduate School of Management. He is still listed as Guest Professor at the Bakke Graduate University.[3]

Beltran now serves as a priest at the Sacred Heart Parish Kamuning.
