John J. Coughlin

John J. Coughlin, O.F.M. is a Franciscan friar, priest, attorney, and canon lawyer. He presently serves as Professor of Religious Studies and Law at New York University, Abu Dhabi. Professor Coughlin's teaching and research interests include comparative religion, ethics, philosophy, theology, canon law, sharia law, comparative law, jurisprudence, legal ethics, professional responsibility, administrative law, family law, ecumenism, and peace studies.

Early life

John Coughlin was born in 1954 at the French Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He attended St. Sebastian School and Monsignor McClancy High School in Queens, New York.

Education

Coughlin holds a Juris Canonici Doctor (J.C.D) and a Juris Canonici Licentiatus (J.C.L.) in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Harvard University, a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Master of Arts in Psychology (M.A.) from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Niagara University.

Professional

Ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1983, Fr. Coughlin is a Franciscan friar of the Order of Friars Minor of the Holy Name Province. Following ordination, he ministered as a parish priest at St.Stephen of Hungary Church and St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City.

After admission to the New York state bar in 1988, Coughlin clerked for the Honorable Frank X. Altimari on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He served as general counsel of St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996, he was legal and canonical counsel to the Holy Name Province of Franciscan friars in New York City.

Upon appointment by John Cardinal O'Connor of New York, Coughlin served as Professor of Canon Law and Theology as well as a Spiritual Director at St.Joseph’s Seminary in New York from 1994 to 2001. At the Seminary, he taught courses entitled "The Sacrament of Penance, Theological, Canonical and Pastoral Aspects," "The Church: The People of God," "Introduction to Canon Law," and "The Franciscan Theology of Creation and Peace." He also served the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York as a judge in the Appeals Tribunal, as vicar of canonical and legal aspects of health care, and as a member of the boards of several Catholic hospitals and educational institutions.

From 1996 to 2003, Coughlin taught at St.John’s University School of Law where he served as Professor of Law. He taught courses in Administrative Law, Canon Law, Family Law and Professional Responsibility. During his tenure at St.John's, he was honored by the law students as the Distinguished Professor of the Year.

During the summer of 1998, Coughlin was a member of the delegation of the Holy See to the United Nations treaty conference that established the International Criminal Court.

From 2003 to 2012, Coughlin served as Professor of Law and Concurrent Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He taught courses in Legal Ethics, Professional Responsibility, Canon Law, and the Canon Law of Marriage. A well-respected member of the Notre Dame Law School faculty, Coughlin was selected as Distinguished Professor of the Year in 2009 and 2011. In 2009, he was also honored with the McLean Award which is bestowed upon a faculty member for extraordinary service to the law school community. In 2010, the Notre Dame Black Law Student Association recognized him with the Crutchfield Professional Excellence Award.

During the Spring 2009, Coughlin was a Visiting Professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

At NYU-Abu Dhabi, Coughlin is Professor of Religious Studies and Law, teaching the courses "Ideas of the Sacred" and "What is Law?" He is affiliated with the program in Arab Crossroad Studies. He also serves as faculty moderator of the debating society.

Publications

Professor Coughlin's writing offers a comparative focus on the understandings of the human person that underpin diverse systems of law. In 2011, he published CANON LAW: A COMPARATIVE STUDY WITH ANGLO-AMERICAN LEGAL THEORY, Oxford University Press. In 2012, he published LAW, PERSON, AND COMMUNITY: PHILOSOPHICAL, THEOLOGICAL, AND COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES ON CANON LAW, also with Oxford University Press. In addition, he has published dozens of articles in journals, books, and periodicals.
