Benjamin Bocio (born Selin Benjamin Bocio Richardson; April 27,1996) is a Dominican healthcare activist and humanitarian who is known for advocating quality access to healthcare in underserved communities.

He became the first Dominican to receive the Diana Award.

[1] [2]

Early life and education[edit]

Benjamin was born in Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. He graduated from high school with an associate degree in Hospitality and obtained his first dental degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo.[2]

When he was 14 years old, the 2010 Haiti earthquake engendered a scarcity of health resources in the southern Dominican Republic. After the earthquake, Benjamin decided to co-found with his father FUMEBO (Bocio Medical Foundation) a nonprofit medical service organization dedicated to providing health resources in the Dominican Republic; especially in the southern region which is the region that shares the border area with Haiti and the least developed region of the country.[1] [3] [4]

In 2021, he enrolled the Advanced Standing DMD at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. [4]

Career[edit]

Charity work and advocacy[edit]

To address inequality, Benjamin designed and implemented a model based on the Robin Hood effect. Through medical outreaches and redistribution of sustainable resources, the foundation provides to low-income communities a wide variety of multidisciplinary health services and resources.[3]

Fumebo has served thousands of patients without quality access to primary healthcare facilities, medicines, and sustainable resources in the poorest communitities of the Dominican Republic.[4] Food, vitamins, clothing, wheelchairs, crutches, and oral hygiene instructions and products are some of the sustainable resources that are provided for the daily life of the beneficiaries. [5] [6]

In 2019, Benjamin was selected to represent the Dominican Republic in London at the most important summit for young leaders One Young World. At the summit, he was the only latin american selected as a delegate speaker. Benjamin participated in the plenary session on Poverty Alleviation (Can Innovation Solve economic inequality?), where he addressed with Muhammad Yunus, Mark Tewksbury, Gro Harlem Brundtland, Thuli Madonsela, and Mónica de Greiff more than 2000 young leaders representing over 190 countries from around the world.[7] [8] [9] Benjamin ended his speech by saying: "Innovation is not always based on technology. Sometimes it’s about changing the system through basic human generosity".[10]

COVID-19[edit]

Through Fumebo, in the most critical moments at the beginning of the pandemic, Benjamin created "Vital Boxes" an initiative that aimed to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers on the COVID-19 frontline and other essential resources such as food, disinfection products, and face masks to families living in underserved communities. The initiative was supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, United Way, and One Young World.[11] [12]
