The Bernedoodle is a dog crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They inherit traits from both of their parents.[1]
History of the Bernedoodle
The Bernedoodle, a designer dog, emerged in the early 2000s from breeding Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. This hybrid combines the calm, loyal nature and tri-colored coats of Bernese Mountain Dogs with the intelligence, hypoallergenic coats, and playful personalities of Poodles. The result is a versatile, affectionate, and low-shedding companion.[1]
Bernedoodles inherit the better traits from their parents, making them friendly, social, and affectionate. They combine the playful, goofy nature of Poodles with the loyal, gentle demeanour of Bernese Mountain Dogs. Great with children and the elderly, Bernedoodles are excellent family pets and therapy dogs.[1]
Health monitoring
Although Bernedoodles benefit from hybrid vigour, they can still face health issues. Regular vet check-ups are vital for early detection. Common concerns include:[1]
- Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: Genetic testing and weight management can reduce risk.
- Eye Conditions: Regular exams can detect problems like progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
- Allergies: Monitor for itching, rashes, or ear infections to manage food and environmental allergies.
- Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV): Prevent bloat in Standard Bernedoodles by feeding smaller, frequent meals and avoiding vigorous exercise after eating.
